When Jesus asks “Who do you say that I am?” in Matthew 16, he isn’t asking for a theological answer, he’s asking for a confession that will cost something. In this message from Matthew 16:13–24, Carl examines how we reveal our answer to that question through how we live: in our economics, our politics, our treatment of the vulnerable. Drawing on Howard Thurman’s Jesus and the Disinherited, Carl challenges us to confront the versions of Jesus we’ve constructed to protect our comfort, and to meet the Jesus who stands with the poor, disrupts power, and says “take up your cross.”
