In Acts 5, the apostles are dragged before the authorities for the second time and ordered to be silent. Their response is simple and devastating: “We must obey God rather than human beings.” In this message from Acts 5:27–41, delivered on the first Sunday of Black History Month, Jason examines why authoritarian power has always feared a church that tells the truth about Jesus, because the resurrection declares that God has judged unjust power, restored dignity to the condemned, and ensured that death-dealing systems do not get the final word. Drawing on the lives of Richard Allen and Jarena Lee, Jason calls us to be the kind of truth-telling community that refuses to be silenced, even when faithfulness carries a cost.
