Before Jesus heals anyone, calls a disciple, or performs a miracle, God speaks over him at his baptism: “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” In this message from Matthew 3:11–17, Jason explores one of the most foundational truths in all of Scripture, that with God, identity precedes achievement. You are not beloved because of what you have accomplished or avoided. You are beloved before any of that. Drawing on the story of Jesus’ baptism and his own memories of being baptized as a nervous thirteen-year-old in a cold New Mexico river, Jason invites us into the disorienting, liberating reality that God sees us through the lens of Jesus, and that nothing we do or fail to do changes what God has already declared over us.
